“Art is the language of my soul. It is the lion protecting my gates. It is the mirror in which I see my true reflection. It is the lamp that I use to explore my inner depths and then give voice to what I cannot otherwise express.”
Language of my soul / Lenguaje de mi alma presents work by Honduran painter and artist Gordon Santiago Arzú Durón. As a believer in inherent beauty and nobility in each human, Gordon produces cerebral mixed-media portraits that accentuate the personalities of his subjects. At a young age, Gordon discovered his love for the arts and would often draw characters with animalistic qualities. He later produced sculptures from wood and other found objects. At the age of twenty-three, Gordon immigrated to the United States and studied fine art at Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, Connecticut. Ever since then, he has consistently produced artwork while refining his eclectic style.
Gordon Santiago Arzú Durón was born in Honduras, Central America, a country rich in culture, natural beauty and spirituality. It is also a country and a people who have faced and continue to face many challenges due primarily to a corrupt government, lack of safety and the exploitation of natural resources. In spite of all these factors, the people of Honduras are warm, welcoming and hopeful.
It was in a small neighborhood of Honduras where he discovered his love for drawing and painting at a young age inspired by a childhood friend who was an incredible artist. The way he drew faces and animals, sparked Arzú creativity and passion for the visual arts. He began by drawing characters from his favorite cartoons. He also created his own toys from wood and other materials he would find in his neighborhood. At that time, studying art was not in his plans; his parents did not have the means to pay for art school. His love and passion for creating art never stopped but he took a break from it to study and work. At the age of twenty-three, he immigrated to the United States and later studied art at Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, Connecticut. In 2014, he received his associates degree in fine arts. Since that time, he has continued creating art and developing his artistic style. His passion for painting and drawing has only grown stronger over the years and he is constantly seeking new ways to push the range of his creativity. His preferred medium is acrylics on canvas or on a wood panel; he also enjoys drawing with charcoal and pastels.
Through his art, Arzú strives to evoke emotions and provoke thought in those who view it. Each one of his pieces is a reflection of his innermost thoughts and feelings, a testament to the power of self-expression.
